This picture I made back in 2000 as a celebration for finally getting my own PC. The background is a photo I took on the shore of Lake Superior near Tofte. The Defender and his Shado were sketched in pencil, scanned, and then colored and shaded with PhotoDeluxe.

It does not depict a particular scene I've written about, but one of a series of encounters that must have happened between these two. The Defender and the Shado think so differently that any exchange between them can sometimes be quite hilarious to overhear. I wonder what they're *trying* to discuss here?

The huge muscles on the Shado's wings are intentional. It's orginally from a place with a much lighter gravity. It has to struggle to fly in this world, but the stronger it gets, the more it weighs!

Wow! Lovely picture. Very well done. I love Shado's wings, well I also love T'DOL's wings as well. ^_^
The folds in the cloak are just wonderful too. *Oh I would love to be there. It is so lovely.*

*Farewell*

I gaped at this pic before, and thought I had commented on it. *scratches head* I must've forgotten!

I really like this piece. I was so tickled to see The Shado (quite an imposing character!), and it fits so perfectly with the background. Good to see 'Fenda too!

1 Joelle Duran replies: "Thanks! I think the Shado's quite lovely, in its own unique way...
*thinks better of glomping it* 12"

Ooh, lovely! The Shado's musculature is very impressive, and I like the fall of the Defender's cloak. I half-expected the Shado to poke its tongue out at me, but I guess that's just your .gif file. ;D

Nope, quite static here, perhaps fortunately!

I think this one is my favourite so far ...

11 Joelle Duran replies: "Thanks! It's certainly a favorite of mine. And it was good to finally pin down the Shado's form, it had been fairly nebulous in my head for so many years. "

I love this picture, I always have done, just never muttered a pointless word ^_^

I can't help but like the Shado in your books, it is just wonderful, I love the neutral way it sees things. Not evil, just not really anything. Such amorality is not easy to carry across but the Shado captures it perfectly.

I'm glad to hear that. Amoral is what I'm aiming for, and it's quite fun to write the bugger.

*smiles* Is t'DoL trying to explain love again, I wonder?

*grins* If so, he's doomed to fail again!

His wings are gorgeous, the Shado's are great too, but it's just something in the blend of t'DoL's wings that works so beautifully. Nice cloaky folds too.

Wonderful stuff.

1 Joelle Duran replies: "Thanks! I'm delighted you like this one. I regret the Shado isn't around for most of my timeline."

You don't happen to have seen my jaw roll past here somewhere, do you? All right, not funny, but this piece is jaw-droppingly gorgeous, Joelle. ^-^

*blushes* Thanks. Have to admit it's a favorite of mine.

Got a nice contrast, and I actually quite like the way the Shado's wings look. I think that a lot of creatures have too little muscles there, as it is. Glad to see it's different here!

I keep expecting a tongue to slither out of that mouth... It's easier here to see the photo, but it's not disruptive. In a lot of cases, I find blending media this different extremely jarring, but I stress, this is not one of them. ^-^

Thanks! I know it's not perfect, but I've also seen much worse.

It gives the piece a very nice flavour, though I'm at a loss of words on how to describe it. And the colouring! I love the colouring! I absolutely abhor drawing on the computer (yes, I've tried) but yours look so nice. ^-^

Thanks! I don't mind coloring on the computer, but still can't really draw from scratch. *needs a tablet*

Very, very nicely done! ^-^

Wow! I love his wings coming out from under the cape. It's such a "startling" burst of color. Subtle and lovely! Excellently done. The rest of the picture is fantastic too and the griffon is beautiful. Very nicely worked.

1 Joelle Duran replies: "Thanks for the kind words! I'm delighted you like it."

Well the whole composition and the combination with the background looks awesome to me. Gotta love the pretty wings poking out of the cape. 2

Thanks! I know *I* do. 12

I have one nitpick with your description though (I do hope you don't kick me for it) 12. Usually it's actually *easier* for something to fly on a higher gravity world, since they usually have thicker atmosphere. It is somewhat counterintuitive but I've watched several science/discovery channel specials on "alternate worlds" (as well as some google searches) and they all agree on this point. The thicker the atmosphere, the "soupier" it is and the more flying becomes like swimming. At that point the actual weight doesn't matter so much. More atmosphere means more "stuff" to give lift and hold you up.

16 Joelle Duran replies: "Grrrr...not happy to hear that one! Because now I've got to find another reason for why the Shado is as it is...and I don't think its fairly brief 'groundbound' period would suffice. *kicks something*I suppose that's yet another reason why I don't want to touch the Shado's homeworld and species with a long stick. *resumes procrastinating*"

The shado looks like a bat griffin. Interesting, and very cool.

11 Joelle Duran replies: "That's a great way to describe it, or 'scaly bat griffin.' Glad you like!"

A cloak over wings... that looks odd, but I suppose it really isn't. O_o

Not much good for flying, but nice for passing as a human at a distance!

Poor Shado, though... I like its wings.

11 Joelle Duran replies: "Thanks!"

I like the ''huge'' muscles; it takes muscles to move wings! 10 Lovely mix between photo, sketch and computer. 2

1 Joelle Duran replies: "It certainly does! It's amazing how strong birds' wings are. Thanks for the comment!"
