Still your illustration style, but this time with some extra-beautifully done costuming and shading (the shadow of his arm falling across his chest is half of what makes it for me). I can well see how the chainmail would have driven you round the bend - and the bracers, I expect - but this is an amazing piece of art! The bracers were just fine, probably because I did them second. The shadow *embarrassed laugh* Was looking good for a while there until my brain cleared and I realized I'd drawn it on everything except the belt. Oh, what mortification! That's why I use the mirror trick to look at a work-in-progess, then the glaring stupidities I just couldn't see jump right out! I loved Finrod too, for the record, but never as much as Fingolfin or Glorfindel. Nargothrond was my favourite kingdom in Beleriand, though. ^_- Joelle Duran replies: "Not as pretty as Menegroth or Gondolin...I quite liked all three of them.Which Glorfindel? Or perhaps I should say, which incarnation? I had quite a soft spot for Beleg Strongbow and Ecthelion of the fountain, myself."
| 16 Jul 2005 | A.R. George | Loading...Yes, I liked Ecthelion too! His name alone is rather spiffing. ^_- Beleg was rather unfortunate. I like him, but he always reminds me of how much I can't stand Turin ... Ah, Turin. I found the tangle between him being doomed and just being stupid quite interesting. Many's the time I'd like to have smacked him one. Hurin Thalion his dad I greatly prefer, He's one of my favorite humans from the Silmarillion. I loved both incarnations of Glorfindel - I used to have a lovely colour plate of him fighting the Balrog at the Cirith Ninniach. One of John Howe's, I think. But Glorfindel in 'Fellowship' is lovely, too. ;D Joelle Duran replies: "That picture by John Howe is to DIE for--I love it!" | |
| 27 Aug 2005 | Becca Lusher | Loading...Ah, lovely, lovely stuff - not a lot I can say that hasn't already been said, but I really must say I love his bracers. Why particularly, I'm not sure, perhaps it's the contrasting colour to everything else he's wearing. Impressing chainmail, just the thought of ever drawing chainmail makes my hands curl up, but you really pulled it off here. There's something quite compelling about his expression, I don't know if the fixed stare of his eyes, or what, but it works beautifully. Like the fall of his cloak too, the way the lines are assymetrical and almost frame him. Lovely stuff ^_^ Joelle Duran replies: "*boggles* And you say you can't leave art comments?!You're sure better than ME, that's for certain.Glad you like it so, and thanks for telling me what struck you. Ack, that chainmail... *hands seize up* " | |
| 9 Oct 2005 | L. Shanra Kuepers | Loading...There goes the jaw again. ^-~ This is gorgeous. It looks beautiful. It's a shame downsizing makes images lose their detail. I'd love to see that. Then again, that might not be a good thing. He's too gorgeous as he is without that detail. *grins* Thanks! Dare I even ask how long it took you to create this? You uber-multitalented woman you! ^-^ And you've got three of these? *keels over* I'm running out of kudos and words of flattery for you, you know! *shakes finger* You'll have to suffer horrible, icky repetition. ^-~ Actually just two. Diptych is for two-parters, and triptych is the more common three-part art displays, like duology and trilogy for books. Don't mean to be insulting, of course, just wasn't sure if you knew the English terms for that. Joelle Duran replies: "And I believe it was 9 months from start to finish, basically one school year in college, though obviously I didn't work on it every day. Plenty of trials on a spare piece of paper and planning during the process, I think I still have some of those scribbles.
You didn't expect me to have words that correctly convey the quality of this piece, did you? I hope not. They don't exist. Picture = beyond gorgeous. They really should have a blushing smiley out of all these 63. Thanks, thanks, thanks!"
| 14 Jul 2006 | Beth Alice O´Leary | Loading...Wow, that's stunning. His expression is perfect, staring off into the distance... Didn't the chainmail take forever? Worth it though, It looks great. Joelle Duran replies: "Ooops, sorry I missed this one! Yes, the chainmail took an eternity and about drove me wild, but it paid off (not that I plan to do any again, mind!).Thanks for the comment!" | |

I love how you used light and shadow effectively in this as well... Joelle Duran replies: "Thanks! It was a challenge working on this in my tiny dorm room--I'm glad I pulled it off."
